The economic ramifications of Co-vid 19 are reflected by the rise in the unemployment rate of Sri Lanka.
While the 2016 – 2018 time frame showed an unemployment rate of less than 4.6%, the following years showed a steady rise in unemployment. With the onset of Co-vid 19, the unemployment rate surpassed 5%, with the highest unemployment rate of 5.8%, recorded in the 3rd Quarter of 2020.
The unemployment rate has somewhat stabilized recently, with 3Q showing 5.2%, a marginal increase compared to the 5.1% rate of the previous quarter.
