The Supreme Court of Sri Lanka recently appointed a 5 judge panel to look into  the petitions submitted by institutions and individuals which included the Sri  Lanka Bar Association and the PC Wijeyadasa Rajapakse. The petitions  challenged the newly presented Port City Economic Commission Bill on the  grounds of it being unconstitutional, thereby affecting the sovereignty of the  nation.

The Bill presented to Parliament by President Gotabaya Rajapaksa called for the  establishment of a special economic commission that would facilitate, regulate  and authorize all financial investments and other activities in the designated  Special Economic Zone of the Colombo Port City.

The Supreme Court has presented its determination of the proposed bill to the  speaker of parliament Mahinda Yapa Abeywardana on the evening of the 5th of  May, 2021 and parliament is expected to hear the determination on the 18th of  May,2021.
