The Supreme Court of Sri Lanka recently appointed a 5 judge panel to look into the petitions submitted by institutions and individuals which included the Sri Lanka Bar Association and the PC Wijeyadasa Rajapakse. The petitions challenged the newly presented Port City Economic Commission Bill on the grounds of it being unconstitutional, thereby affecting the sovereignty of the nation.
The Bill presented to Parliament by President Gotabaya Rajapaksa called for the establishment of a special economic commission that would facilitate, regulate and authorize all financial investments and other activities in the designated Special Economic Zone of the Colombo Port City.
The Supreme Court has presented its determination of the proposed bill to the speaker of parliament Mahinda Yapa Abeywardana on the evening of the 5th of May, 2021 and parliament is expected to hear the determination on the 18th of May,2021.
