Barcelo’, Spain’s second-largest hotel of Spain by size announced the opening of two hotels in Sri Lanka as a part of the agreement signed with Browns Investment, an LOLC subsidiary in 2019.
The company had a less than ideal entry into the Asian market. Barcelo’ entered into a partnership with Plateno, the then second largest chain in China. However with Jin Jiang, the current second-largest hotel chain in China purchasing Plateno the agreement was disrupted. While waiting for the new agreement to form the company partnered with Betterwood in China and entered the Sri Lankan market.
The two hotels are Paradise Dambulla, a 4-star hotel with 67 rooms, and Eden Beruwala which will open its doors in November 2021. The pact also called for the construction of two hotels in the Maldives which the company hopes to complete by 2022. The company has also made plans to construct 3 five-star hotels in the region.
