The Sapugaskanda Oil Refinery, which accounts for 14% and 29% of Sri Lanka’s petrol and diesel supply, will be shut down once again.
According to Minister of Energy Udaya Gammanpila, the shutdown will take place on the 3rd of January, 2022, and the refinery will commence operations on the 30th of January, 2022.
To address the shortage, the government has entered into an agreement with a Singapore-based energy commodities company which will commence its supply operations from January 26th.
The Energy Minister elaborated that the shortage of foreign currency has hindered the purchase of crude oil. However, the minister reaffirmed that the temporary shutdown of the refinery would not cause a deficit in the country.
