In conjunction with the push to increase the use of renewable energy the government is ready to prepare a strategic plan for the increase in the use of electric vehicles. The proposal was presented on Monday at the Cabinet meeting by the Environment Minister.
Through the increase in the use of electric vehicles the government hopes to reduce the nation’s air pollution levels of which 60% is caused by vehicular emissions according to a research conducted by the University of Moratuwa.
This should not come as a surprise as according to the Department of Motor Traffic the number of registered vehicles at the end of 2020 was 8 million. However the government has identified that most of the registered vehicles are over 10 years old and due to a lack of proper maintenance these vehicles tend to generate more vehicular emissions.
