With the government planning to uplift the local batik and handloom sector of the country the State Minister for Batik, Handloom Fabric and Local Apparel products MP Dayasiri Jayasekara stated that the government plans to halt all imports of batik and handloom but highlighted that they have no plans to stop the import of clothes and textiles.
According to the minister the government has made the necessary financial allocations to support over 11 000 batik producers in the country and plans to train 10 000 worker each electorate. As part of their development strategy the government also plans to open over 200 centres all across the island.
