According to the latest statistics, the misconception of trading in the stock market is limited to a select few may be a thing of the past.

According to the Colombo Stock Exchange, the number of Central Depository System {CDS} accounts has increased by 55% from 424,288 accounts in 2010 to 659,578 accounts in June 2021. At the same time, the number of local companies having their own CDS accounts has increased by 85% with 11,294 accounts being recorded in June 2021 compared to the 6114 accounts back in 2010.

The number of foreign companies that have registered to invest has also increased with the number increasing from 3893 in 2010 to 5718 in June 2021. However, the country’s current financial situation has seen a net outflow of LKR 41 billion so far.

In August 2021, the CSE became the leading global performer with a turnover of LKR 143.5 billion, a 167% increase compared to the previous month. 6.2 million Shares exchanged hands which resulted in a 10% gain by the All Share Price Index {ASPI} and S&PSL 20 while also contributing to a market capitalization of over LKR 4 trillion.
