The government has been on a hot streak of reversing its decisions, and the import ban of chemical fertilizers has become the latest in that list.
Despite vehement protests from farmers all over Sri Lanka, President Gotabaya Rajapakse decided to ban the import of all chemical fertilizers into Sri Lanka. The main reason for this controversial move was cited as health reasons. While arguably an excellent choice to make, the implementation was a complete mess and lacked proper organization. Furthermore, the haphazard ban could not have come at a worse time as Co-vid 19 forced a nationwide lockdown.
According to the Minister of Agriculture Mahindanada Aluthgamage, the government has revoked the gazette notification banning chemical fertilizer import, which was issued on the 26th of April, 2021. The private sector will be allowed to import chemical fertilizer, pesticides, and weedicides once again.
