Advocata’s Bath Curry Indicator (BCI), which tracks the price fluctuations of the most commonly consumed food ingredients, noted a 15% increase in prices from November – December 2021.
The increase was the result of the rise in the price of vegetables. Brinjals, Red Onions, and Tomatoes increased by 51%, 40%, and 10%. The cost of 100g of chili’s increased by LKR 18 to record a new price of LKR 71.
As a result of the new price increase, an average family of four who spent LKR 1165 in December 2020 must spend LKR 1593 in December 2021.
