Sources within the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) reveal that Sri Lankan business tycoon Dhammika Perera could be appointed to fill the vacant Parliamentary seat of former Finance Minister Basil Rajapaksa.

Former Finance Minister Basil Rajapaksa stepped down from his role as an MP yesterday. Speaking at a media briefing, he stated that he was unaware of plans to appoint Dhammika Perera to the parliament through the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) national list. He further noted that the decision regarding his now vacant parliamentary seat would be made as per the discretion of the SLPP.

“I have also met Perera. He has good proposals for the economy, so he should be given the opportunity to implement them,” said Basil Rajapaksa.

When questioned about the possibility of Dhammika Perera entering the parliament, SLPP General Secretary Sagara Kariyawasam stated that Perera is one of the potential candidates who may replace Basil Rajapaksa in the parliament.

Further fuelling speculations was news last night revealing the creation of a ministerial portfolio titled Minister of Technology and Investment Promotion. Given his expertise in the fields concerning the newly created ministerial portfolio, many believe that Perera will take up the position.

However, according to a report by The Morning today, Dhammika Perera has given up his hopes of entering the parliament, owing to concerns regarding conflict of interest allegations. His concerns stem from the fact that many of the factories he owns through corporate behemoths such as Hayleys PLC and Vallibel One PLC would directly benefit from his proposals as a minister.
