According to the latest data the Central Bank of Sri Lanka predicted that the tourism sector would yield close to $19 million in the first four months of 2021.
The predicted earnings serve to show just how detrimental the effect of Co-vid 19 has been on one of Sri Lanka’s most popular and lucrative sectors as the earnings received from tourism in the same time period the previous year was close to $682 million. The earnings from tourism as of April 2021 which was estimated based on tourist arrivals amounted to $6 million.
A total of 13 797 tourists arrived in the island in the first 4 months of 2021 primarily from the nations of India, China and Kazakhstan. However the number of new arrivals also showed a decrease as the number of tourists that arrived in March were 4581 while April showed 4168 arrivals.
