Amidst the many internal & external challenges faced by Sri Lanka, Finance Minister Basil Rajapaksa is ready to present the budget for the following year.
The budget for 2022, which will be presented at 2 pm today (12th November), will be the 76th budget of independent Sri Lanka and is the second budget of President Gotabaya Rajapakse’s tenure. The 2022 budget is also Basil Rajapakse’s maiden budget as the finance minister.
According to Dhammika Dassanayake, the Secretary-General of Parliament, the debate on the Appropriation Bill will take place from the 13th November until the 10th December 2021. The second reading debate will take place a week from tomorrow, and the vote on the first bill will take place on 22nd November at 5 pm. The committee stage debate on the budget will go on for 16 days, and the final vote on the bill will take place on 10th December 2021.
The Secretary-General also added that arrangements have been made for the budget to be presented in sign language during the live broadcast. The seating arrangement of the parliamentarians will be according to the health guidelines, and the public gallery will remain closed to the general public. Only a limited number of government officials and foreign dignitaries will be attending.
The debate will continue until 5.30 pm today, and following the budget speech, the Finance Minister is set to host the traditional tea party to a limited number of dignitaries.
